Tips To Keep Your Wastewater Pump Free From Blockages

Tips To Keep Your Wastewater Pump Free From Blockages

Managing a wastewater pump can pose to be a challenge. The million-dollar question is, “How do I keep my wastewater pump free from blockages?”

Tip #1 Consider the design of the impeller

Check if the design of impeller in your pump is best suited to your application. This needs to be checked carefully before the purchase of your pump, as mostly, changing the impeller means you have to replace the entire pump. We recommend checking this before you purchase your pump.

Most wastewater pumps have impeller types like – single vane, multi-vane or vortex. These 3 types vary in differences, with a vortex having the largest free passage, meaning the solids passing through could be a greater size, whereas multi-vane impellers offer the lowest free passage, being suitable for treated wastewater.

However, considering the design of the impeller is one of many factors that comes into choosing the right pump for your application. These include the pump’s efficiencies, energy usage and more.

Tip #2: Remove Floating Solids in the Pumping Pits

As a general rule, most wastewater applications have two or more submersible pumps at the bottom of the pit. When the pit fills to a specific height, the submersible pumps start to play their part. They suck the wastewater out bringing the water level back to the original level. But in order to do this, the submersible pump needs to surrounded by water to make this operation efficient.

If there are floating solids, they can’t be sucked away so they slowly form a thick mass that sinks down and gets sucked into the pump, causing the pump to be blocked. But that’s not all; these solid particles can also tangle the float switches.

To stop this from occurring, you can limit the number of solids in the pit, or a vacuum tanker lorry can be used to pump out the pump station remains periodically.

Tip #3: Switch the Duty Pump Periodically

A common question asked is, how can I increase the life of my pump? And the answer given is if you want to increase the life of your wastewater systems, you must regularly switch the duty of your pump. Don’t use a single pump as the duty pump. This not only helps in preventing blockages, but also prevents the congealing of solid wastes. When a pump is not used for a long time, solids accumulate around it. These solids are likely to get sucked into the pump when its switched on after a long time, leading to a blockage.

Tip #4: Service Wastewater Pumps Regularly

Finally, ensure that you have a regular servicing schedule for your wastewater pumps. During service, ensure that the technician removes the pump parts and clean the impeller to remove anything accumulated. Remember that regular servicing keeps your pumps functioning efficiently for years to come without any frequent repairs or replacements.
